Gameday Predictions for 8/18

Hey all! Predictions are going to be a bit longer today. The reason being that I got so much slack from my AA peers last week for not being politically correct about the Barracuda "drowning". So this week I was challenged to be as politically correct as possible, and that's exactly what I went for. If you want to see how last week's predictions went click here. I was only able to fit my Premier Four predictions into Reddit considering how long they were, so if you would like to see my Indy/Mav predictions for this week please look directly at the document here.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Russell Shepard
With KB off to Buffalo Devin Funchess will assume the WR1 role and hopefully continue is progression to a quality receiver this season. Moving into the spotlight will be Shepard. While Cam has only targeted Shepard 19 times this season, he's pulled in 11 of them for an average of 12 yac. Two questions loom: will Cam find Shepard more often in his progressions and how will Shepard handle an increased load?
Ed Dickson
Without KB in 2015, Cam turned to Greg Olsen as his safety blanket. Olsen won't be back until after the BYE, so its entirely believable that Dickson could see an increase in targets now. His production dipped a bit after an outstanding performance in Detroit. Will Ed prove NE and DET weren't fluke games or will he fade just as Greg resurfaces?
James Bradberry
Bradberry had a rough week against Tampa Bay according to PFF (49.2). He was faced with a daunting task in covering Mike Evans. Giving up just 5rec for 60yds in 9 targets is pretty respectable against a top-tier WR, especially considering 46 of those yards came in the 4th quarter when he switched from press to zone coverage. This week he faces another familiar GIANT in Julio Jones. Last December JB held Julio to 4rec, 60yds, and 0TDs. If he can replicate this performance Sunday, life will be much harder for Matt Ryan.
Devin Funchess
With everything surrounding the KB trade, Funchess now needs to show he was worth giving up the Panthers 1st round Draft pick in 2014. Funchess will have a tough time going up against a good corner in Desmond Trufant in a defensive system that has tended to play well against vertical schemes.
Kevon Seymour /Daryl Worley
Mohamed Sanu could provide some problems for whichever CB is oppostie Bradberry. With Bradberry locked on trying to shut down Julio Jones, it will fall to either Seymour or Worley to stop the shifty Sanu.
Panthers Front Seven
The Falcons are still trying to find their identity under a new offensive coordinator. With a low end 48.00% redzone efficiency this season (with only a 35.29% away) many of the Falcons redzone attempts have come from running back Devonta Freeman. The Panthers front 7 will need to continue to shut down the running game to help keep the Falcons out of the endzone.

MATCHUP HISTORY

BY THE NUMBERS

60.6
The Kelvin Benjamin era of Carolina Panthers history is over, like it or not. He leaves Charlotte as arguably the third-best wide receiver in team history, behind Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad and ahead of names like Willie Green and Mark Carrier. His 60.6 receiving yards per game rank second overall in team history, behind only Smitty's 67. He ranks sixth in total yards (Smith, Muhammad, Olsen, Walls, Carrier) and sixth in TDs (Smith, Muhammad, Walls, Olsen, Ginn).
12
With the KB trade and the recent revelation that Marty Hurney will be handling at least the draft and free agent signings this offseason, it's worth remembering that the Panthers will have 12 unrestricted free agents at this season's close. There are big names like Andrew Norwell, Star Lotulelei, and Graham Gano as well as other names like Jairus Byrd, Teddy Williams, and Kaelin Clay. The full list is here.
49
It's a number you've surely sighted already: Christian McCaffrey's 49 receptions set a single-season Panthers record for a running back. And we're only halfway through the season. Perhaps even more shocking is his average of 6.1 receptions per game, a number that despite a small sample size still dwarfs Steve Smith's 4.6 receptions per game. How sustainable is this?
747
It's utterly impossible to understate the impact Luke Kuechly has on this defense when he's healthy. Since 2012, his 747 tackles lead the entire NFL, despite the fact that he's missed a not-insignificant amount of time to injury. As seen last week, he also has a massive impact in coverage: his interception broke a tie with Thomas Davis and gave him 14 on his career--the current active leader for the Panthers.
0
The much-maligned Matt Kalil had the best game of the season against the Buccaneers' utterly pathetic pass rush. He allowed 0 pressures of any kind. In fact, the entire line kept the Bucs from knocking Cam Newton down even once. Maybe a confidence booster like this is what he needs going forward, especially if it does in fact turn out that his brother's season (maybe even career) is done.

PANTHERS POWER RANKINGS

Outlet Rank Last Week Weekly Change Notes
10 13 ↑ 3 Because he’s not a quarterback, we probably don’t talk enough about how valuable linebacker Luke Kuechly is. The Panthers are a totally different team without him, and not many defensive players have that impact. No other NFL inside linebacker is as valuable as Kuechly.
12 19 ↑ 7 Cam Newton takes a lot of the blame for the Panthers' struggles, but the most worrisome aspect of Carolina's offense has been its running game. Panthers backs are averaging 2.8 yards per rush this season, the worst in the NFL.
8 7 ↓ 1 Recap: The reeling Panthers got great news two days before they clashed with the Buccaneers. Middle linebacker Luke Kuechly cleared concussion protocol and was ready to help his team end a two-game skid. And the veteran performer came up big with eight tackles, one interception and a fumble recovery in the team’s stifling of the struggling of the Buccaneers. All told, the Carolina defense limited Tampa Bay to 279 total yards and forced Buccaneers’ quarterback Jameis Winston into three turnovers. Cam Newton was effective in running for 44 yards and throwing for 154 but also threw another interception. Next Week: The Panthers already have one home divisional loss on their resume this season and need to take care of business against the visiting Falcons this week. The bad news for Ron Rivera’s team is that Atlanta has ruled this series as of late, winning three consecutive meetings. That includes a 33-16 triumph in Charlotte a season ago. Playoff Hopes: Carolina is in prime position to capture the NFC South for the fourth time in five seasons. But they have to find some answers when it comes to their sporadic offensive play. Regardless of their up-and-down showing, the Panthers are right in the thick of things and one win away from matching their victory total of 2016.
12 19 ↑ 7 They didn’t exactly get all of QB Cam Newton’s recent issues resolved or get the offense completely back on track Sunday at Tampa. But the Panthers did emerge with a victory, so they won’t complain too much. The return of injured TE Greg Olsen to the practice field this week could set the stage for him to be back in the lineup in late November.
12 15 ↑ 3 MLB Luke Kuechly is such a difference maker when he's in the lineup - and let's hope that remains the case moving forward.
9 8 ↓ 1 Despite some recent stumbles, the Panthers are still one of the better teams in the NFL. They lost in consecutive weeks in tough, physical games. They got back on track with a win over the AFC South rival Buccaneers in Week 8. The biggest issue with Carolina right now is that the running game is underwhelming. The Panthers are better when they can overpower you on the ground, so finding a spark in the run game should be a priority. Quarterback Cam Newton still makes some questionable decisions and looks for the deep throw too often. If he can cut that out, the Panthers will be better off. The Panthers defense is special. The front four is amazing, and having Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis behind it makes life miserable for opposing offenses. The secondary isn't elite, but it is well-coached and plays within the scheme well. I fully expect the Panthers to be in the NFC playoffs.
13 16 ↑ 3 The peaks-and-valleys campaign continues for the Panthers, who, one week after playing their worst game of the season in Chicago, controlled the Bucs for the lion's share of their NFC South tilt in Tampa. James Bradberry stonewalled Mike Evans when the receiver lined up on his side of the field. Carolina made the Bucs' offense look silly on third down, where Tampa went 2 for 12. The Panthers' offense wasn't much better. Cam Newton led the team in rushing and averaged fewer than 5 yards per throw on 32 attempts.
13 17 ↑ 4 The offense still isn't clicking, but they found a way to beat the Bucs behind the defense. They will need to score more this week against Atlanta.
